THE WHOLE HOLIDAY PACKAGE! IT’S THE BIGGEST HOLIDAY RACE IN THE NORTHWEST!

LIMITED ENTRIES IN 2023! DO NOT WAIT!

Get in the holiday spirit and bookend your race season with Portland’s favorite winter Half Marathon, 10 miler, 10K, and 5K!  All races start and finish at the beautiful LEED Platinum-certified Daimler Truck North America campus on Swan Island and feature carolers, music and cookies along the course and more holiday festivities at the finish line than you can shake a candy cane at!  Sure, we spend nearly a year of planning and organizing an awesome race course through miles of city streets, but it’s the FULL EXPERIENCE that sets the race apart! Read more below!

MEDALS: All finishers will receive a LARGE and always super-cute Freddi the Yeti medal (pro tip: use them as tree decorations each year!). Our medals are guaranteed to make you smile! This year’s theme is Freddi the Gingerbread Cookie! Run, run as fast as you can! Will you catch Freddi?

LONG SLEEVE TECH SHIRTS: All registrants that sign up before the shirt deadline will get one of our popular long-sleeve tech shirts! These shirts are available to those that register before the shirt deadline and come in men’s and women’s sizing. Always a super cute logo and always a wonderful and soft fabric!

AWESOME VENUE & STAGGERED STARTS: Over a dozen race waves to keep racers spread out and the race operating smoothly! Tents, heaters, and a beautiful setting along the river at Daimler HQ!

CAROLERS & MUSIC ON COURSE:  Caroling groups will be scattered throughout the course to give you a hearty dose of holiday cheer as you pass by. From girl scouts, to youth groups, to school choir classes, the community will be bundled up and ready to cheer you on! All groups are fundraising groups that we love to donate to!

HOLIDAY COOKIE AID STATIONS: All race courses will feature a special “FREDDI’S COOKIE” station to provide you that little extra motivation to get through the course! Costumed purveyors of cookies will greet you with a platter full of cookies and a whole lotta cheer.

POST RACE ENTERTAINMENT:  The finish venue is a holiday party! Tents at the finish venue create a wonderful and safe meeting place for post-race photo ops with Freddi and friends, conversation, beer drinking and more. Vendors selling products and giving away freebies will be there to peruse and investigate as you revel in a race well done.

REFRESHMENTS: Our friends at Rogue Brewery will be there to serve you some of their award-winning brews. We will also have multiple food trucks at the finish venue for you to choose from (bring your wallet or card!)! HOT CHOCOLATE station will be returning for this year as well!

POST RACE MUSIC & DANCING: Our DJ will be spinning holiday beats all morning long inside our tents and outside at the start/finish line area. From classic holiday songs to some more upbeat music.

AWARDS CEREMONY and RANDOM DOOR PRIZES: There are no official awards ceremonies, but we will have age group winner awards available and will have results kiosks available as well. NOTE: We provide prizes for FIRST place in each age group, not top three. Plus, raffle prizes!

COSTUME CONTEST: Costume contest competitions all morning long so nobody misses out. Head up to the stage, let them know you want to enter, and he’ll include you in the next “runway” exposition of costumes for the crowd. Team and individual contests offered.

HALF MARATHON COURSE

Strava map link here: https://www.strava.com/routes/16040772  (USATF Certification # OR18026LB)

The half course will start and finish at the Daimler Trucks North America campus on Swan Island. The course features views of Downtown Portland, the University of Portland campus, the St. Johns Bridge, and Pier Park. You will also be treated to a special GINGERBREAD COOKIE aid station with tasty holiday treats and lots of carolers along the course! Both the 10K and half feature a challenging hill within the first mile (don’t worry, we’ll keep you entertained on the way up!) but what goes up, must come down! You will love this hill during the finish as your cruise back down to the sounds of cheers during your last mile to the finish! COURSE TIME LIMIT/CLOSURE SCHEDULE: 11:45am (11:30am is our strong recommendation for planning on finishing given the course limits and clearing procedures of the police). 7:40am early start is the earliest start available and there will be no earlier starts than that time due to safety and road closures.

10 Miler Course

Click map on right for larger image.

The perfect compromise for those just not ready to bite off the 13.1 miles of the half but think the 10K may be a little too short.  We’ve got you COVERED with our 10 miler! The course turns around just before the St. John’s bridge and will start and finish at the Daimler Trucks North America campus on Swan Island along with the other races! The course features views of Downtown Portland, the University of Portland campus, and the St. Johns Bridge. You will also be treated to a special GINGERBREAD COOKIE aid station with tasty holiday treats and lots of carolers along the course! The challenging hill within the first mile is there, but what goes up, must come down! You will love the downhill finish as your cruise back down to a fast finish!

10K COURSE

You will also be treated to a special GINGERBREAD COOKIE aid station with tasty holiday treats and lots of music and carolers along the course! Both the 10K and half feature a challenging hill starting within the first mile (don’t worry, we’ll keep you entertained on the way up!) but you will love this hill during the finish as your cruise back down to the sounds of cheers during your last mile to the finish!!

The NEW 5K course is back and faster than ever with approximately 2 miles taking place along the Willamette Waterfront path along the Daimler campus on Swan Island. The course features views of the Willamette River, the Fremont Bridge, and downtown Portland looming in the distance. The course is COMPLETELY flat and takes place entirely on asphalt and pavement to give you a chance to set your next PR. The 5K will also include carolers along the path and a GINGERBREAD COOKIE aid station serving tasty cookies for all participants! Finish to cheering spectators right in front of Daimler’s LEED-certified headquarters. Medals for 5K finishers as well!

* Please check back in before race day and look for pre-race emails. It is not likely, but extenuating circumstances can occur that necessitates slight changes to the race day start schedule. Double checking a few days before the race is always a good idea!

DETAILS FOR WAVE STARTS:

  • Stay out of the START ZONE until it’s your time to go! This will help keep the race starts flowing smoothly.
  • Please look for your wave zone FLAG WHEN YOU ARRIVE  and listen for your turn to enter the START ZONE. It will follow the schedule above to the minute to keep everyone heading out safely and quickly.
  • Not sure if you are in one zone or another? It’s OK! Just pick a zone and stick with it. The goal is to reduce congestion and prevent large bubbles on the course.
  • Please do not “sand bag” in order to get out early. For example, if you are an 11 min pace and you want to start early in the early start wave at 7:40am, you can put yourself and others in danger by creating congestion and confusion on the course. PLEASE BE HONEST.

2023 BIB PICK-UP DATES:

NOTE: These dates could  be updated 3 weeks out from the race day, so please check back prior to race just to make sure!

COMMUTE OPTIONS AND DESCRIPTIONS:

CLICK BELOW FOR UP TO DATE PARKING INFO!

https://foottraffic.us/holiday-parking-and-shuttles/

Race parking at the venue is limited, but we have a brand new FREE shuttle from Interstate Ave. to alleviate congestion and keep our race course safe. Read more below.

NEW PAID PARKING & FREE SHUTTLE!
Parking at any of the Daimler lots adjacent to the venue will be just $4 and MUST be purchased ahead of time within this registration (it’s listed as an “add-on” when you choose your ticket type).

There is also a FREE shuttle from Interstate Ave. to alleviate congestion and increase safety on the race course. Thank you for your help in making this race safer and more enjoyable for your fellow participants!

Please plan to arrive 45 minutes early if you are concerned with traffic. Remember, there are thousands of others starting the race when you do, so if you try to arrive 15 minutes before your race, you will be stuck in traffic (think trying to park in the garage at a Blazers game 10-15 minutes before tip-off).

SUGGESTED PARKING OPTIONS:

  1. SHUTTLE: This is free and easy to access. We’ll have info with the exact logcation on Interstate Ave. soon but there will be over 10 shuttles taking you to the venue and back to your vehicles.
  2. LOTS AROUND DAIMLER: There are multiple lots that our staff will be directing you to park around Daimler Truck Headquarters. You must have a parking pass on your front windshield. You cannot pay for this at the race. You must pre-purchase.
  3. PUBLIC TRANSIT AND BIKING: There is a MAX stop just up the hill and plenty of bike racks at the venue!
  4. Parking in Overlook Neighborhood (legally) and walking or jogging down. This is a GREAT way to get a warm up in and not have to deal with any traffic heading down Going St.

IMPORTANT TIPS:

  • CARPOOL:  This is the number one thing you can do to make it a smoother morning. If you are meeting friends, think about meeting in North Portland somewhere and jumping in one car before driving down to Swan Island!
  • DROP OFF LANE: Only for vehicles leaving t he venue (no dropping & then parking). Max 1 min. drop of time only. CLICK HERE FOR THAT GOOGLE MAP LOCATION
  • LIFT/UBER/RIDESHARE: Please have them follow YOUR link that you provide them here for where to drop off. Don’t let them use the Daimler address given that it will not be accurate directions.
  • REGULAR PARKING: Follow signs/staff
  • BIKE PARKING: In front of Daimler
  • BUS STOP: Bus #72 takes you right in FRONT of the venue!
  • MAX LINE: Looking for any easy down hill warm up? Drop off at the Yellow line Interstate/Prescott stop and jog under 1 miles downhill to the venue!

To keep our races safer and comply with MANDATORY USATF insurance requirements, we are implementing a NO IN-EAR HEADPHONE POLICY. The long and short of the reasoning is fairly straight forward: 1.) Our insurance requires it. We have been getting pushed on this and in order to maintain our insurance we need to have this policy stated. 2.) Not hearing your surroundings can result in a multitude of safety and directional issues and keeping even ONE earbud out can be the difference between hearing a car or a person or instructions from our course marshals. Every race we hear from people that either miss a turn or a turnaround point where we have a marshal standing next to a sign loudly announcing instructions. But as we all know, having earphones in and getting in the zone just happens and you may not notice it just by looking! That’s why utilizing both sense of sight and sound is critical.

However, we LOVE training with music and know how motivating it can be for some of you, so we have some solutions for ways that you can STILL compete with headphones below! Read on!

  • Keep just one ear-bud in! This is a super simple way to still be aware of your surroundings and stay safe. As we mentioned above, it’s the complete unawareness of activities around you that resulted in safety issues. If you have one earbud out, you can still hear our course marshals, police officers, vehicles, or other participants around you.
  • Using a bone conduction headphone like Shokz. This technology is pretty rad and sounds great. Read this Buzzfeed review here which explains a lot. You can also buy these online here or in any Foot Traffic store to test them out.
  • Go headphoneless! There are carolers and music groups all along the course! No matter the weather, we donate to some amazing groups that head out there to keep you motivated along the way!
  • Carry a mini speaker! Probably not a very likely scenario, but we’ve seen it done and it’s absolutely OK to do!

HELP REDUCE WASTE!

Did you know that we go through over 8,000 cups in a typical year at this race that just end up in the landfill and require harvesting trees to produce the paper cups? Did you know there’s a solution that is pretty darn simple and involves just one cup that you can reuse for ALL of your races and in your car and anywhere that you may need a cup in a hurry?  Read below about our cupless plan this year!

FAQS

WILL THERE BE ANY PAPER CUPS?

Yes, some. Cupless is not required and we will have cups on our courses for 2023 for the time being. BUT we are going to be reminding everyone about our cupless challenge repeatedly as we near the event! It’s our goal that you CHOOSE to make this change before we mandate it!

WHERE DO I GET A REUSABLE and COLLAPSIBLE RACE CUP?

If you already have one, you are all set! Just put it in your pocket on race day! If you don’t, you can buy those in any local running shop or almost any outdoor shop! We’ll have some super affordable options at bib pick up as well to ensure that you don’t have to commit much money at all to do. You can buy these in any Foot Traffic store or online for $5 per cup or two for $9 or you can grab them at any sporting goods store usually too!

HOW WILL YOU DISTRIBUTE WATER IN EACH CUP?

We will separate our water stations into two sections to accommodate cupless participants as they approach first and those that opt for a cup will have a second station to fill. The cupless station will have volunteers simply pouring water in the cup as you hold it out. There will also be water jugs with a spigot for you to self-fill.

DO I NEED TO USE A COLLAPSIBLE CUP OR CAN I USE ANY WATER CARRIER?

There are a ton of other hydration options including larger hand-helds, packs, and water belts. If you have those, you are welcome to bring those instead! Those options also offer some additional benefits given that you can store more water and drink between stations and enjoy less congestion at the water stations. Contact any Foot Traffic store if you need guidance on what options are best for you!

WHY AREN’T YOU PROVIDING FREE REUSABLE COLLAPSIBLE CUPS?

This is very simple. Races that have to produce and provide thousands of free reusable cups is akin to handing out a free reusable grocery bag to every person at a grocery store instead of a paper bag. Sure, in THEORY, if someone used that bag continuously from that point forward, it could make a difference. But the reality is we are just replacing one item with another item with arguably even larger environmental footprint.  Our goal is to encourage everyone to have a reusable cup at the ready instead of relying on a new one every race or event. We know you’ll forget sometimes, and that’s ok. We’ll still have some paper cups. But we can definitely make a change with a little practice! It’s our goal to help encourage everyone to remember to simply BRING YOUR OWN reusable cup just like bringing your own reusable grocery bag that you hopefully reuse for dozens or hundreds of races throughout the years!

 HOLIDAY FAQS:

  • What happens if WEATHER or public health emergencies require cancellation? The race will adhere to any public health authority or City of Portland police and PBOT requirements if they cover outside group event restrictions. In the case of cancellation, all registrants will automatically be switched to a virtual race platform and receive all the swag that has been ordered for you months in advance to plan properly. For those not wanting to do the virtual race, you can receive a voucher for 50% of your registration for the following year and also STILL receive your swag (again, the swag is already ordered ahead of time, so that will not be able to be cancelled). By registering, you agree to adhere to this rule and have signed a waiver that reflects this rule. Thank you for understanding and we hope you LOVE the race experience and swag, regardless of any cancellations required in partnership with local authorities. There will be NO REFUNDS, no exceptions.
  • Is there a bag check? Yes, there is a bag check. We recommend you have your own bag ready in advance and just write your bib number on the outside of it in advance (duct tape or a tag on the handle will work well).
  • Are strollers allowed: Yes, strollers are allowed for all races. Please give yourself plenty of space and be aware of how much space there is around you to allow for easier passing and navigation.
  • CAN I GET A DEFFERAL FOR A FUTURE RACE?  We do not offer a deferral to a future race. All items are purchased and planned for the participants that have registered in a sold out race. We offer the ability to transfer to a different person or a different distance, however.
  • Are there REFUNDS for this race? No, similar to a concert or other limited capacity event, we do not offer refunds of any kind. Given the size of the event, it’s our priority to serve the thousands of people that will be in attendance and make sure they are taken care of with early ordering of items like shirts, medals, and more. These items have to be ordered months in advance. This applies to injuries or any reasons for refunds (other than duplicate orders). We cannot plan properly with a limited entry race and allow registrations and refunds throughout the registration process. Similar to a sold out music concert, once your ticket is purchased, there are no refunds and you are responsible for finding someone to transfer to.st
  • Where do I park?  See the parking section above. There are multiple lots all around the Daimler campus we will direct you to. NEW this year is a paid parking and free shuttle program. See above for more information regarding that. In addition, we respectfully ask you to PLEASE CARPOOL or use public transport or bike. Swan Island is centrally located and has light rail within about a mile and bus lines on Greeley Avenue. The area is VERY bike friendly as well. Please give yourself AT LEAST 30 minutes before the race to get parked and get ready for the race.
  • Are earphones allowed in this race? However, we LOVE training with music and know how motivating it can be for some of you, so we have some solutions listed above for ways that you can STILL compete with headphones below!
  • How do the staggered starts work? We will be staggering our starts based on pace groups by just a few minutes to ease any congestion at the very beginning. The exact schedule will be announced as soon as we are closer to the race week but the overall start time frame will be over the course of about 20-30 minutes so everyone will be on the course around the same time, but just spread out a bit more.
  • Are spectator allowed? Yes, we strongly believe that the support of our friends and family are important for our mental and physical well being. But we absolutely only want one vehicle per household or group, if possible. Parking is limited. In addition, we ask that spectators provide plenty of space in the starting area for adequate spacing.
  • Are dogs allowed? No, for insurance purposes and for congestion and safety, they are ABSOLUTELY not allowed. You will be asked to leave if your dog is at the venue with you.
  • Are there water stations? Yes! We will have at least 6 water stations on the course for the half marathon and 2 for the 10K and one for the 5K. We will have water, electrolytes (Gu tabs), and gels at each station and cookies at other stations on the course!
  • How does the virtual race work? It’s really simple! 1.) Register for the virtual race. 2.) Race on your own anytime and anywhere between December 11th – 25th.  3.) You will receive a text and email prompt that you can submit your finish time to and any photos if you want to add them! 4.) You will be able to pick up your swag at any bib pick up location OR you can choose to have it shipped to you using our shipping link.
  • How are we doing the packet distribution? We are offering a bib pick up over the course of multiple days before the race (dates to be announced soon).
  • Can I have my virtual items shipped? YES, you can! You must request and pay for this through our shipping link within the registration (just click on “register” and you’ll see a separate ticket there). NOTE: Your items will likely not be received before Dec. 11th if you choose to have them shipped given the timing of deliver of the race swag items.
  • Can I have my items shipped if I’m doing the in person race? Unfortunately, no. Items won’t be available early enough to get them to you on time.
